The Secret to Foul Ball Success

3 wins in and I feel like it’s time to reveal the secret to the Anvil/Formic softball team’s transformation. The key is…we’ve been doing this routine daily in the off-season. It keeps us loose and stretchy so we can make those double plays.

You can never get enough exercise in. The bigger the circle the smaller the waist.

If you don’t have it by now, you’re never going to get it.

Foul Balls Strike Again

The Anvil/Formic Softball team had our second game on Tuesday night, despite the 106 degree heat. We figured we’re used to functioning in warm temperatures due to a minimally effective a/c system in the office and would therefore be at an advantage against a team that had stayed cool in their own offices all day long. And we were right.

The Foul Balls came out strong against the Griffs of Grady Britton (I think it’s a Harry Potter reference) and kept the first few innings close. Apparently they teach you how to play ball in Jersey because Kurtis wrangled in a grand slam in the 3rd inning that put us ahead of the Griffs. This also marked the first grand slam in Foul Ball history, it was glorious. Kurt continued to earn MVP status with a double play to shut down G.B.

It was a game filled with sweat and blood (no tears, there’s no crying in softball) and a few minor injuries. We were sliding into bases (safe, of course) hitting our own teammates standing on the bases (Dylan’s sorry Anna) and even using our own noggin’s to intercept the other team’s throws. Anna made the game ending catch on a foul ball as catcher and secured our second win of the season 14-11.

Stay tuned for updates after our game next Wednesday, and maybe I’ll remember to bring my camera one of these days, and we’ll have real pictures.

Anvil on NOT Failing: Portland Advertising Softball League

Well folks, we had our season opener last night, and team Foul Balls came out ready to play. The game started with some high scoring innings from both teams, but after the 3rd inning the  Anvil/Formic team was neck and neck with CMD. And then the Foul Balls took it up a notch.

The runs kept coming in for the Foul Balls while shutting down CMD. We closed out the last three (at least) at bats for the CMD team in a 3-up, 3 down no runs scored fashion. And that, ladies and gentlemen is how you win games.

Big plays were made by Mac-Daddy Makary Hudson on 3rd, once he tamed the muscles on a few over-throws to first, which are really the bane of our team’s existence.  Our outfield didn’t let the 80+ degree temps and blinding sun stop them from making “play of the day” worthy catches – held down by John “Knuckles” McPhee, E-Slizzy NiceFace Killah (aka Eric) and John R – the R stands for redeemer folks, don’t let him fool you with this “Robbins” nonsense. Although this kid may have hit a pop-fly and ended one of our innings, he’ll snag crazy hits into right field all day long. (Video below is not actual footage from last night’s game, but accurately portrays the play that was made.)

Of course the ladies held it down, hitting in RBI’s. No strikeouts for this team thanks to our collective pitching efforts.

And Kurtis cut the sleeves off his uniform.
